KUTING Workshop: The Art of the Magic Weavers

Resource persons are: Dr. Luis Gatmaitan, Prof. Heidi Abad and Ms. Lara Saguisag.

Dr. Gatmaitan, TOYM and Palanca Hall of Fame awardee will talk about the life of a writer whose audience are children and young adults. Though glamourized and sometimes, sanitized, writing for children is not what it seems to be. Learn from "Tito Dok's" experiences as he recounts his humble beginnings as reader and writer for children. Indeed, the road to Palanca glory is not strewn with rose petals.

Prof. Heidi Abad will provide a basic lecture on the writing process and how it can be practically applied on writing for children. She will also share her expertise and experience as writer, teacher and judge in many story writing contests that may fuel one's desire to take on the challenging but exciting task of weaving magic for the young reader.

Ms. Lara Saguisag will show participants the bedrock of poetry writing for children. Be prepared as she wield ryhme and reason to weave a tapestry of magical words in free verse and metered poems.

There will also be a Writers' Rigodon where in participants will get the chance to interact with KUTING writers who have published a children's book or two. It's like speed dating but with writers for children this time. Ask questions and discuss issues with KUTING writers as they in return, interface with more mature readers and other professionals.

This shall be held on January 12, 2008, at Room 204, College of Education,
Benitez Hall at U.P. Diliman. Workshop Fee: Php1,000.

For details, pls. contact AGAY (09178116961) or ZARAH
(09209602884) or email them at the ff. addresses:

Remembering Rene

Augie Rivera's stirring eulogy for Rene Villanueva delivered last night at Sanctuarium during the tribute by people in the Children's Literature industry.

ANG BONGGANG-BONGGANG SI RENE!
NI AUGIE RIVERA
9 DECEMBER 2007
SANCTUARIUM

MARAMI NA SA INYO ANG NAGBIGAY PAPURI KAY RENE BILANG “MABUTING GURO… MABUTING KAIBIGAN… MABUTING MENTOR…” PERO KUNG KAYO AY TAGA-BATIBOT, AT NAKATRABAHO N’YO SIYA, NAGING BOSS, AT NAKASAMA SA OPISINA NANG HALOS PITONG ARAW SA ISANG LINGGO, AT SA KASO KO, SA LOOB NG HALOS PITONG TAON… MEDYO KAILANGAN MO YATANG MAGHAGILAP NG IBA PANG ADJECTIVE BUKOD SA “MABUTI”.

ISA ‘YAN SA MGA NATUTUHAN KO KAY RENE: KUNG MAGLALARAWAN KA, HINDI UUBRA ANG PANGKARANIWAN LANG. AT KUNG MANG-OOKRAY KA RIN LANG, GAWIN MO NA NANG BONGGANG-BONGGA!

KAY RENE KO UNANG NARINIG NA PUWEDENG ILARAWAN ANG ISANG TAO NA “MUKHANG-LANGIB.” O KAYA’Y “MUKHANG PUSIT!” AT HIGIT SA LAHAT, “MUKHANG PUSIT NA DE-LATA!” BIRUIN N’YO, PUSIT KA NA NGA, HINDI KA PA FRESH… PROCESSED AT MAY PRESERVATIVES KA PA!

KUNG SASABUNIN MO RIN LANG ANG IYONG STAFF, GAWIN MO NA ITO NANG BONGGANG-BONGGA! SIGAWAN, BULYAWAN, MURA-MURAHIN, ALIPUSTAHIN, ITULAK-TULAK SA HAGDAN… AT HINDI PO MGA EKSENA NI CELIA RODRIGUEZ ANG AKING INILALARAWAN. AT ALAM ‘YAN NG ILANG HENERASYON NG MGA TAGA-BATIBOT NA NA-EXPERIENCE IYON, AT NAPILITANG MAG-RESIGN DAHIL HINDI NA KINAYA ANG ATING LOLA!

PERO, IN FAIRNESS KAY RENE, TUWING MATATAPOS NIYA AKONG SABUNIN NOON, (AT MAY PANAHONG PATI SI ELMER,) HIHINGIN NIYA ANG OPINYON KO SA BUHOK NIYANG BAGONG-TINA NG BERDE, ASUL O VIOLET. MATAPOS NIYA AKONG SIGAW-SIGAWAN, LALAPIT ‘YAN PAGSAPIT NG HAPON AT SASABIHING: “TARA! MERYENDA TAYO! O KAYA, TARA! NOOD TAYO NG SINE! O TARA! INUMAN!”

DECEMBER 1992 NANG ALUKIN AKO NI RENE NOON NA MAGING FULL-TIME STAFF WRITER NIYA SA “BATIBOT,” WALA PA AKONG KAMUWANG-MUWANG NOON SA PAGSUSULAT PARA SA CHILDREN’S TELEVISION. FIRST IMPRESSION KO NGA: SUS! MADALI LANG ISULAT ‘YAN! LAKING-SESAME STREET YATA AKO! (ACTUALLY, MAS CONCERN KONG MAKITA IN PERSON SI PONG PAGONG AT ANG IBA PANG MGA MUPPETS NG SHOW.) PERO NANG MAGSIMULA NA ANG TRABAHO, NA-REALIZE KONG HINDI PALA ITO MADALI.

MADUGO ANG MGA NAGING UNANG PAGTATANGKA KO SA PAGSUSULAT. GRABE KUNG KUMATAY SI RENE NG MGA ISKRIP! KUNG WRITER KANG MAHINA ANG LOOB, LUHAAN, DUGUAN AT GULA-GULANIT KANG PUPULUTIN SA MAY KANAL SA 821 EDSA, PAG PINA-REVISE NIYA ANG ISKRIP MO! HALIMBAWA, ANG 5-PAGE SCRIPT KO, IKO-CROSS OUT NIYA ANG 1ST PAGE, AND 2ND PAGE, AT SAKA HAHATULAN NG KANIYANG RED PILOT PEN NA: “DITO, DITO KA SA
PAGE 3 MAGSISIMULA!” (SA MGA UNANG ATTEMPTS NAMAN NI ELMER BILANG STAFF WRITER, MAY PAGKAKATAONG ISINOLI NI RENE ANG SCRIPT NIYA NA WALANG KAHIT ANONG MARKA KUNDI: “PANGIT!”

PERO JEDI NANG MAITUTURING SI RENE SA LARANGAN NG SCRIPTWRITING FOR CHILDREN’S TV, NA WALA NAMANG FORMAL EDUCATION NOON, AT HANGGANG NGAYON. KAYA NAKINIG LANG AKO SA MGA SINASABI NIYA, NAGSULAT AT NATUTO.

ARAW-ARAW NA GINAWA NG DIYOS, SASABIHAN AKO NI RENE: “O BIGYAN MO AKO NG SAMPUNG PUPPET SEGMENTS. SAMPUNG LIMBO SEGMENTS…SAMPUNG PALAISIPAN… SAMPUNG STORYTELLING… SAMPUNG TUTULA-TULA… “ AT KUNG ANO-ANO PA, NA PARANG UMOORDER LANG SA MCDONALD’S!

(PERO, NAGPAPASALAMAT PA RIN AKO. DAHIL KUNG HINDI NIYA PINATULAAN SA AKIN ANG LAHAT NG GULAY, HINDI KO MAIISIP NA WALA PALA ANG ‘AMPALAYA’ SA KANTANG BAHAY-KUBO, AT HINDI KO SANA NAISULAT ANG UNA KONG LIBRO.)

DAHIL SA DISIPLINANG IPINATAW, ESTE, ITINURO NI RENE, UNTI-UNTI AKONG NASANAY SA PAGBUBUO NG MGA KUWENTO. AT ALAM KONG NAHULI KO NA NGA ANG “BATIBOT STATE OF MIND” NANG HINDI PA NATATAPOS ANG 1993 AY IPINUTONG NA NIYA SA AKIN ANG KORONA NIYANG “HEAD WRITER” NA SUOT-SUOT NIYA MULA PA NOONG UNANG KUMANDIRIT SINA PONG PAGONG AT KIKO MATSING.

SABI NI RENE SA AKIN: “IT TAKES SOME KIND OF MADNESS PARA MAG-SURVIVE KA SA CHILDREN’S TELEVISION.” PALAGAY KO, GANUNDIN ANG KAILANGANG MADNESS PARA LUBOS MONG MAUNAWAAN AT MA-APPRECIATE SI RENE.

NAA-AMAZE AKO SA INYONG MGA NAKAPAGSASABING “MENTOR” N’YO SI RENE. PERO AKO, NAGPAPASALAMAT NA AKO NA, MULA NANG UNA KAMING MAGKAKILALA, MAS NARAMDAMAN KONG ‘COLLEAGUE’ AT ‘KAIBIGAN’ NA ANG TURING NG LOLA KO SA AKIN.

NAAALALA KO, ISANG PASKO, BINIGYAN AKO NI RENE NG LIBRO NG MGA TULA, NA ANG DEDICATION:

KAY AUGIE—
NA NAKILALA KO BILANG MANDUDULA,
NA NGAYON AY NASA KUWENTONG PAMBATA—
NAILIGAW BA KITA?
BAHALA KA NA SA BUHAY MO!
MERRY KRISMAS!

RENE

HINDI MO AKO NAILIGAW, RENE. TULAD NI HANSEL, KUSA KONG KINAIN ANG MGA INIWAN MONG PIRASO NG TINAPAY, KAYA NAPADPAD AKO SA MAKULAY AT MARIKIT NA MUNDONG ITO.

NGAYON, NAIS KONG MAGPASALAMAT SA IYO. HINDI KO ITATANGGI NA MALAKING IMPLUWENSIYA AT INSPIRASYON KA SA AKIN BILANG ISANG MANUNULAT NG KUWENTONG-PAMBATA.

PALAAM NA, BONGGANG-BONGGANG RENE! KASAMA MO NA NGAYON DIYAN SI STA. BUTSIKI!

TURUAN MO ANG MGA ANGHEL KUNG PAANO MAGTIKWAS NG KILAY.

TURUAN MO ANG MGA ANGHEL NA MANG-OKRAY HABANG KUMAKANDIRIT.

AT KASTIGUHIN MO ANG MGA ANGHEL SA LANGIT… NA MAHILIG MAG-BATIBOT! ☺

Ifugao Epic for Kids by Astrid Tobias

Two new children's books have been published by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) to teach children about the Ifugao epic, Hudhud.

Pumbakhayon and Halikpon are retellings of two episodes from the epic which is usually chanted by the Ifugao people in Cordillera while harvesting rice. Both books are written by Mae Astrid Tobias, with illustrations by Jose Miguel Tejido, and translated into Ifugao by Maribelle Bimohya.

Pumbakhayon is the story of how the mythical figure Pumbakhayon passed on the different epics to the Ifugao people. Halikpon, on the other hand, is the love story of Bugan and Aliguyon.

“This book on tales of the Ifugao Chant, Hudhud, is designed for the child so that he will grow into the adult person that is envisioned to be steeped in the culture of his people, the Ifugao,” says anthropologist Dr. Jesus Peralta in his foreword. Dr. Peralta is the Project Director of Safeguarding and Transmission of the Hudhud Chants of Ifugao, a three-year project of the NCCA to promote awareness and appreciation of Ifugao heritage.

NCCA will distribute free copies of the books to Ifugao schoolchildren.
For more information, please contact Cecil or Min, National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), 633 General Luna Street, Intramuros, Manila. Tel. No. 527-4434 or 527-2192.

Plans plans and more plans

Last GA proved to be a very productive meeting with a lof the members and probees attending. Special thanks to Perpi for the house and the juice and the hospitality and to Zara for the cake. We had a lot to talk about such as the Singapore experience of Lalaine, the Children and Media workshop I will be conducting for Kuting on Feb and March, the probee requirements for manuscript workshops, contests and workshops to attend and latest gossips about the members.

Next month I will be conducting a workshop on Children and Media and will have a video showing as well as give some techiniques in mapping storylines and scripts. I have some of the videos with me and at KNN and I have some handouts to reproduce.

For February we will also have a manuscript workshop and I also volunteered so that I can revise for Canvas. I haven't received any comments yet from Augie or Heidi so I might as well give a copy to the org and get their comments. I hope I win.

There is also the Bagets and the super mega launch of the Kuting individual titles. Hopefully by March or April. UP Press is going to have theirs on Feb and we will be part of it as well. Sales are doing well and we hope that teachers will require their students to read them.

Lalaine is also requiring her students to organize a children's literature conference and we would be invited. I hope to talk or to react. The Educ people are always nice and accomodating. I had a talk with them twice last year and I had fun showing them old photographs in a powerpoint presentation. They treated me to lunch at the Old Spaghetti House. Augie and Cynthia and Heidi were also there.

We have planned out most of the year up to October. We are also planning a tie up with the Dumaguete people to have children's workshop and go to Dumaguete. That's very exciting and I wouldn't miss it for the world. I have never been to Dumaguete and I'd love to see the place and the people and eat their food. Ian is a good friend of Kuting and has always been active in supporting our goals.

So other stuff to watch out for : Teatrong Mulat and Kuting partnership, Kuting merchandising, more books by Kuting members, and the Palancas.

New award

We just got news that Lara Saguisag was cited for her poetry in a recent contest and her work will become a chapbook available soon. This is great news for us especially since Lara is in New York struggling to succeed in the competitive publishing industry. All of us wish to have a book published by Scholastic or Simon and Shuster and Penguin. This is one wonderful step for Lara and all the writers who ever wish to make it. It's an inspiration. This means it is truly possible. Now, it's time to write.
